Relief Housing
Dwelling

An affordable and sustainable response to the issue of habitat in precarious environments.
A plan to improve the living conditions of a growing population in need for a stronger, safer shelter.

More homes are needed:

  • 1 out of 3 city dwellers (about 1 billion people) lives in a slum (UN-Habitat)
  • More than 14 million refugees and internally displaced people live in tents or other temporary shelters (Kissick, et all 2006)

Relief Housing

QuaDror Structural Frame

An efficient and sustainable response to the global issue of habitat

While other initiatives provide temporary relief solutions to many or permanent housing to a few, QuaDror presents a strong structural frame to build upon and a blank canvas for integrated and creative design solutions, while preserving the organic diversity of cultures and ecosystems.

  • An immediate response to disaster: the QuaDror structure for recovery shelters
  • A long term solution: strong, simple and affordable building system

QuaDror is a didactic solution and a tool for building strong housing structures which envelops can be improved over time.

The QuaDror kit consists in 4 articulated connecting joints and 8 static joints that allow the assembly of structural members made from local material (wood beams and other materials).

The easy-assembly can be made flat on the ground and easily lifted up and open to a strong self-standing structural frame. The QuaDror structural frame opens up four identical reverse triangles in opposite sides which gives the structure its unique strength.

One billion people, or one third of the urban population, still don’t have access to proper habitat (source: UN Habitat).
We believe that by improving their structures, we can inspire hope and improve lives.

While the needs and environmental contexts are different around the world, the strength of the QuaDror geometry, its various advantages and ease of assembly remains the same anywhere.

The QuaDror structural frame can adapt to various conditions and adopt various materials and configurations.
QuaDror is an efficient and versatile way to build strong habitat structure with local material.

A stable structure provides sheltering relief in the present and the structure to build upon in the future.
By deploying bare structural units, people are able to personalize their dwellings. Ownership and identity are not foreign impositions, but instead come from within.

The QuaDror Kits include:

  • 4 articulated joints
  • 8 static joints

We supply the knuckles that allow for the unique geometry of the structural frame

  • The structural members (beams) can be made of any local material; bamboo, wood, etc.
  • The envelop, roof and floor can be made of local materials and fixed to the structure.
  • The connection to the ground can be made in different ways depending on the environmental context (soil, climate, economical resources, etc.)

Due to their abaility to adapt to various conditions and to adopt various materials, the QuaDror connecting joints are easy to ship:

A 40 feet long container can contain 1296 QuaDror Kits which allow the construction of 1296 QuaDror Homes

A 20 feet long container can contain 648 QuaDror Kits which allow the construction of 648 QuaDror Homes

Maximum impact using minimum energy: the building system of QuaDror presents environmental and economical performance while encouraging social empowerment.
